Tailscale for Dummies: A GUI for Learning ACLs

Why I Built This Project

I wanted to learn how Tailscale ACLs (Access Control Lists) work without spending hours reading documentation only to forget it the next day. Instead, I decided to create a hands-on project: a GUI for creating and managing ACLs, along with other complex access control items. Not only did this help me learn, but it also resulted in a practical tool to simplify the configuration of Tailscale ACLs.

What This Project Includes

The Tailscale for Dummies repository features a set of tools designed to make Tailscale ACL management approachable for both beginners and seasoned users. Here’s a breakdown of the key components:

1. ACL Creator

A user-friendly interface to create and manage ACL rules. The form allows users to:

  • Define actions (e.g., accept traffic).
  • Select protocols (TCP, UDP, etc.).
  • Specify ports, sources, and destinations.

The ACL Creator dynamically updates the configuration as you add rules, making it easy to experiment and see changes in real-time.

2. Group Creator

This tool helps define user groups with ease:

  • Add a group name.
  • Input a list of users (emails separated by commas).
  • Automatically generates a JSON configuration for groups. group

    Manage hosts with a few clicks:

  • Specify host names and associated IPs or CIDR ranges.
  • Generates a structured output for use in Tailscale configurations. host

    Tags are crucial for fine-grained access control, and this tool simplifies their management:

  • Create tags and assign owners (emails).

Why This Matters

Tailscale ACLs are powerful but can feel intimidating at first. This project removes much of the friction by providing an interactive, visual approach to learning and configuring ACLs. It also serves as a stepping stone for exploring more advanced features like Tailscale grants and other access control mechanisms.

Looking Ahead

Building this project has been an incredibly rewarding way to deepen my understanding of Tailscale ACLs. In the future, I plan to explore Tailscale grants and incorporate additional tools to further simplify access control management.
